The Zaouia of Assa

The Zaouia of Assa is an iconic and spiritual site located in the heart of the Assa province. Founded in the 13th century by the conquering saint Sidi Yazza Ou Idha, this zaouia is not only a religious center but also a symbol of the region’s cultural and historical heritage. The zaouia is surrounded by a lush palm grove that adds to its charm and ecological significance.

The zaouia has long served as a meeting point for trade caravans connecting Morocco with neighboring countries, including Mauritania, Senegal, and Mali. The tombs of the 366 saints who taught here for nearly a millennium are still revered by local communities, whether Arab, Berber, or Harratine. Although partially in ruins, the zaouia’s buildings have largely been restored as part of a pilot program by the Southern Provinces Development Agency, aimed at integrating ecotourism and promoting local handicrafts and products.

The town of Assa, located about 300 km southeast of Agadir, is itself a historical gem. Founded in the 13th century, it spans several hectares and is surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes, including mountain ranges, gorges, and canyons. The people of Assa, mostly from the Ait Oussa tribe, are known for their hospitality and rich culture, proudly wearing traditional blue or white gandouras.

Visitors to the Zaouia of Assa can also explore the old ksar, an impressive architectural complex built from dark stones, and discover ancient rock engravings that testify to the region’s prehistoric history. Walks through the palm grove offer immersion in a unique ecosystem where traditional agriculture and local biodiversity coexist.
