The Ksar of Assa

The Ksar of Assa is a historical treasure perched on a rocky ridge overlooking the Assa oasis. Founded in the 13th century by Sidi Yazza Ou Idha, this ksar is a remarkable example of traditional Saharan architecture, with its imposing walls, majestic towers, and narrow streets.

Built from dry stone and pisé (rammed earth), the Ksar of Assa reflects the ingenuity and adaptation of its inhabitants to the harsh climatic conditions of the Sahara.

The Ksar of Assa played a crucial role in the region’s history as a center of trade and culture. It served as a stopover for caravans crossing the desert, transporting goods between Morocco and sub-Saharan countries. For over a decade, the ksar has undergone rehabilitation work following specific architectural standards and using local materials. These efforts aim to preserve the historical integrity of the site while making it accessible to tourists. In 2006, the Southern Provinces Development Agency launched a restoration program to revitalize this emblematic site. The project to redevelop the old Ksar of Assa was selected in 2013 for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, recognizing its cultural and architectural importance

The upper part of the ksar offers stunning panoramic views of the town and the Assa palm grove. Visitors can walk through the ksar’s narrow streets, discovering the ancient houses, mosques, and the mausoleums of saints. Scattered rock carvings throughout the ksar are another major point of interest, providing a glimpse into the prehistoric art and culture of the region.

While exploring the Ksar of Assa, tourists can also visit the Zaouia of Assa, located within the ksar. Founded in the 13th century, the zaouia continues to attract pilgrims and visitors from around the world. Each year, the Moussem of the Zaouia of Assa celebrates the Prophet’s birth and is marked by religious, cultural, and commercial activities.
